We’re hauling out our favourite leather and suede alongside our cozy sweaters. But while leather is made to last, it does need a little love and attention to keep them looking their best. From protecting against moisture and everyday wear to preventing dryness, stains and cracking, a little care goes a long way. After all, investing in the right care today can help your favourite pieces stay beautiful for many seasons to come.
We recently were invited to explore the latest Fall and Winter styles with Canadian brand Danier Leather. Their timeless yet modern pieces had us drooling but our conversation also turned to how to take care of our cherished items and invest in new ones too! Here are some easy steps to help maintain the longevity and appearance.
Moisturizing Your Leather
Use a good leather lotion every two to three months helps to prevent “crispy” or dull leather. Pay close attention to high movement areas like elbows, waistlines, and necklines.
How to Apply Creams and Lotions
It’s recommended to use a microfibre cloth on leather goods. With a dab of the lotion, use a circular motion. Allow the product to air dry for better absorption.
Storage of Leather
Store leathers in closets where the pieces can breath and avoid covering them in garment bags. Keep your leathers in a cool, temperature stable environment like the basement rather than an upstairs closet or garage.
Maintaining Zippers
Over time, and exposure to natural elements, zippers can become stiff. Try gently rubbing candle wax or wax paper to help. This goes for handbags as well. If you find zippers breaking over time, bring it to a leather specialist for repairs – even shoe cobblers could help!
