My mom introduced me to the Beatles at an early age. She reminisced about the time of pandemonium when the Fab Four took over the world. Mom was a teen in Hong Kong and along with her friends they too would be swept up in the craze. Sir Paul McCartney was her absolutely favourite. Even when she moved to Canada and had me, her first born, Beatles music was played often. I still love her Beatlemania stories and the way she sings along with pure joy to this day. So, naturally I was really drawn to Paul McCartney and his photo exhibition now in Toronto at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO).
Paul McCartney Photographs 1963 -64: Eyes of the Storm is an extraordinary collection of more than 250 images captured by Paul McCartney himself at a pivotal moment in music history. Taken as The Beatles sky-rocketed from the UK to North America, the photographs document the dizzying rise of a band on the brink of global superstardom.
At a time when every eye (and every camera lens) was fixed on The Beatles, McCartney turned his own Pentax camera outward. What must have felt surreal from the inside is counter-balanced with remarkable intimacy: the faces, the cities, the hotel rooms, the frenzy. He photographed the photographers. He captured the crowds. And in between the chaos, he documented the quiet, deeply personal moments unfolding around him and his bandmates — offering a rare, firsthand glimpse into their lives as their fame continued to rise..

What to Expect in the Paul McCartney Photo Exhibition…
The exhibition is like a time capsule taken by McCartney during a three-month period between late 1963 to early 1964. However, it wasn’t until 2020 that the film negatives were discovered. Then, the National Portrait Gallery began working with him to create an exhibition. The show opened in London in 2023 and has since toured including Tokyo, Nashville and now Toronto.
The images in the exhibition feature cities the band toured including Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington and Miami. Why did McCartney snap up photos during the tour? I was surprised to learn that it wasn’t that he had intentions of documenting for future exhibits purposes but he was taking photos was because he didn’t know how long this ride of fame would last.
Defining Moments:
In this exhibition visitors will find images and videos taken during the exhilarating time. Images here include moments from the Beatles first and second appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, the first U.S. live shows in Washington, DC, and at Carnegie Hall. More personal moments are also shown as the musicians spent time with family and friends behind the scenes at hotels while on tour. Departures and Arrivals offer a glimpse moment with adoring fans.
The historic images reveal the intensity of life on tour, as well as quieter, more personal moments. We see candid snapshots of his bandmates — John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr — offering a heartfelt window into friendship, and fame. It’s also fascinating to see McCartney not just as a superstar but as a thoughtful, observant, and deeply multifaceted artist behind the lens.

Visitors to this exhibition will also discover hand written notes, travel documents, and paraphernalia while the Beatles were on the road. Commentary by Sir Paul McCartney through audio clips are provided throughout the exhibition. QR codes are spotted throughout. You can also download the Bloomberg Connects App on your devices for more.
