We often find filming crews in and around the city. The noticeable long white trucks and trailers and the orange traffic cones parked on our streets are good indication that something is in production. Fans of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy may be interested in some of the filming locations right here in Toronto!
The Liberty Grand: As the apocalypse is happening around them in season 3, Luther and Sloane have an impromptu wedding in Hotel Obsidian. The wedding was filmed at The Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex, a popular waterfront event venue located at The Exhibition Place.
The Lakeview Restaurant: In episode 1, Viktor tries to convince Marcus not to come after his siblings over coffee in a diner. This scene was filmed at The Lakeview Restaurant, located on Dundas St W near Ossington Ave. Built in 1932, this historic diner is frequently used in films and series due to its authentic and classic diner aesthetic. You may also recognize the diner in Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water.
The Gardiner Museum: Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy introduces the new “Sparrow Academy” to the timeline. The Sparrows have an intense fitness regimen, and their workout scenes were filmed in a room at The Gardiner Museum at 111 Queens Park Blvd (currently closed for a renovation).
The Canadian Opera Company Theatre: In Season 3, Allison and Viktor meet with Ben and Fei to explain the paradox and discuss Marcus’ whereabouts. This scene was shot in the courtyard at The Canadian Opera Company Theatre on Front Street East, situated in a group of factory and warehouse buildings that date from the 19th century.
The Great Hall: The Keepers meeting in the first episode of Season 4 took place in The Great Hall, a Victorian heritage building located in Toronto’s trendy West Queen West neighbourhood. First opened in 1889, this historic venue features four unique event spaces that are perfect for weddings, parties, and concerts. You can still find its original indoor running track as well as indoor swimming pool. The pool however, is not open to the public.
Scarborough Bluffs: Klaus has an emotional conversation with his mother on a beach surrounded by towering cliffs in season 3, episode 5. This scene was filmed at the stunning natural beauty of the Scarborough Bluffs.
Sunnybrook Park: The sprawling greenspace of Sunnybrook Park is featured multiple times throughout The Umbrella Academy’s final season. Located between Toronto’s Bridle Path and Leaside neighbourhoods, this popular 147 acre park features beautiful walking trails, three sports facilities, a dog park, outdoor fitness equipment, and plenty of space for summertime picnics.
Mega Cleaners: The dry cleaner where all members of The Umbrella Academy finally reunite in Season 4 is East York’s Mega Cleaners. While you won’t be able to find any jars of miracle hiding in this neighbourhood, you can find several amazing spots for shopping, dining, and relaxing.
Linsmore Tavern: At the start of Season 4, Viktor Hargreeves is running a bar in Nova Scotia, as a nod to actor Elliot Page’s home province. The interior shots of Vik’s Bar were actually filmed on Toronto’s Danforth Avenue in the historic Linsmore Tavern. First opened in 1934, the Linsmore Tavern is a social hub for the Danforth that features live music almost every night.
