It’s the holiday season and we’re looking for a fun break in between the office parties, cookie exchanges, and running up our credit cards. We can’t think of a better way to bring the holly and the jolly than a night out at the Comedy Bar Danforth’s 101 Holiday Movie Moments.

This one-act extravaganza reimagines the classic Hallmark Christmas Movie plot while hilariously attempting to pay homage to 101 beloved moments from your favourite holiday classics. From “Bah Humbug” to “Yippie-Ki-Yay,” this show promises an enchanting blend of nostalgia, laughter, audience interaction and festive cheer, making it a must-see holiday experience!

101 Holiday Movie Moments is on stage until December 31, 2023 at the Comedy Bar Danforth (2800 Danforth Avenue).

Directed by Carly Heffernan, the show features a killer Toronto all-star cast including Amy Pornel (The Great Canadian Baking Show, This Hour Has 22 Minutes), Andrew Bushell (Tallboyz, Designated Survivor), Kris Siddiqi (The Boys, Baroness Von Sketch Show), Kirsten Rasmussen (Slo Pitch, Band Ladies), and Paul Bates (The Tuxedo, Dan for Mayor).

We had a chance to find out more from Kirsten Rasmussen! In this conversation, Kirsten shares insights into her role, explores the nuances of holiday movie humor, and why comedy shows are a great holiday date. We hope your ideal holiday date is winning tickets to see 101 Holiday Movie Moments while enjoying one of Comedy Bar Danforth’s signature pizzas! (see Contest below!)

With “101″ Holiday Movie Moments to choose from, can you tell us one of your favourite Movie moments from the show?

Kirsten: Ooh many moments to choose from! Hard to pick just one! Can I pick three? I’ll pick three. So my three favourite movie moments from the show are the insults that Ann Pornel’s character hurls at my character straight from Kevin’s older siblings in Home Alone. That kid had a lot of siblings, and they were all mean! There’s a tiny line from one of my favourite Carol Kane flicks, Scrooged… did you think that was a Bill Murray vehicle? Nahh, it’s all Carol baby! And there is an epic moment from Gremlins that can only be described as life changing for everyone involved.

What can we expect from this show that Toronto audiences won’t get from other holiday revues this year?

Kristen: Well, at other shows you won’t be seeing Ann Pornel, Paul Bates, Kris Siddiqi and Andrew Bushell. Only 101 Holiday Movie Moments has well-dressed reality show hosts, comedy legends, Netflix actors and hallmark hunks and me, a person who loves wearing wigs!

The show encourages audience interaction. Can you provide another sneak peek into how attendees become part of the show?

Kirsten: I love giving sneak peeks and I’m terrible with secrets, so it’s my pleasure to tell you all the ways in which you might be involved in our show! From the first moment you walk in to the theatre you might notice a tiny noise making machine at your seat that you are encouraged to make noise with. Then once the show starts there are moments you get to speak and sing along with the actors with lines and songs from your favourite holiday movies! There are improvised moments in the show that the audience can inspire with suggestions! There might even be a moment that an audience member takes a role in our quaint little show! MAYBE YOU? And finally there are moments where you are simply encouraged to yell and drink! Yelling and drinking are really nostalgic for me around the holidays!

With a stellar cast and creative team, what is like working with such talented people, and how does this collaboration contribute to the success of a show like this?

Kirsten: Yes, this cast and crew is stacked! It’s amazing working with funny people because you are always laughing. I have cried laughing rehearsing this show, I will say at least three of us nearly peed our pants during a particular rehearsal! We all come from improv and sketch, which is all about listening, building on each other and finding the best way to get a laugh and that’s what we did in this show. We started with an amazing script from Carisa Barreca, Kevin Sciretta and then we built on it, with the wonderful direction from Carly Heffernan and the support of our incredible producer Alex Bondesen. Also huge shout out to our talented stage manager Sam Polito who has more than 400 cues during this show, it’s AMAZING!

Since we are doing a “Date Night” contest, in your opinion why are comedy shows a good date night idea, especially during the holiday season?

Kirsten: Comedy show are great date ideas, because in my opinion the best relationships have a lot of laughter in them. I love the sound of my wife’s laugh, I love making her laugh and I love hearing her laugh! So if you think you like someone, you better bring them to a comedy show and make sure you love the sound of their laugh, cuz hopefully you’ll be hearing it over and over for the rest of your life! But also our show is about love, the centre of our story is a big city business woman goes back to her hometown and we all know how that’s probably going to end. IN A SMOOCH???
