The Ultimate Woman’s Solo Travel Checklist

There’s something very liberating about throwing your essentials into a carry-on, boarding a plane or train solo, and knowing the adventure is all yours. No compromises, no waiting around for friends (or family members) to decide what’s for dinner, and definitely no judgment on your choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Woman’s solo travel awaits!

Solo travel as a woman is more than just a trip — it’s a reset button, a confidence boost, a great way to connect with yourself, and a reminder that the world is waiting for you. Whether you’re wandering cobblestone streets in Europe, hopping cafés in Montreal, booking that dreamy beach escape in Costa Rica, or just a mini getaway to rediscover your own city, it’s all about freedom, curiosity, and a little smart planning.

Why We Love Woman’s Solo Travel

  • Set the pace (sleep in, or catch the sunrise — it’s your call).
  • You meet more people (locals and other solo travellers).
  • You won’t need to compromise on your daily activities (museums, shopping, street art, foodies, photography, etc.)
  • Gain confidence in ways that stick long after the trip.

And maybe the best part? When you look back, you’ll realize it wasn’t just a trip — it was proof that you can create joy, adventure, and unforgettable stories all on your own.

The Ultimate Women’s Solo Travel Checklist

Here’s a mix of must-haves to keep your journey smooth, safe, and as stress-free as possible:

Travel Basics:

  • Passport + copies (paper + digital)
  • Travel insurance (your future self will thank you)
  • Credit card + local currency cash
  • Portable phone charger (and a few charger adapter ends come in super handy)
power bank - amazon - travel gadget
This portable charger proved to be very handy with its various charging options

Safety & Peace of Mind:

  • Crossbody or anti-theft bag
  • Doorstop alarm or portable lock
  • Emergency contacts (local and at home) + embassy info saved on your phone
  • Keep a card in your wallet (or on you) with emergency contacts as well.
  • Downloaded offline maps (Google Maps, Apple Maps), but also determined the best routes. Pro Tip: ask your hotel concierge or Airbnb host for the best routes.

Health & Comfort:

  • Refillable water bottle
  • Hand sanitizer & wipes
  • Lightweight scarf (doubles as blanket, cover-up, or pillow)
  • Small first aid kit (painkillers, band-aids, essentials)
  • Vitamins and daily supplements
  • I also love bringing Saje’s Peppermint Halo
  • A small package of tissues (you might not always find toilet paper!)

Style Meets Practical for woman’s solo travel:

  • Versatile outfits you can dress up or down. Don’t look “like a tourist,” try and blend in with the local vibe. Some go-to brands ideal for travel include: Uniqlo, Kit and Ace, Muji, and Diane Kroe for her versatile “more than one way to wear” pieces!
  • Comfortable walking shoes and clean white sneakers come in handy. See Canadian brand Vessi as well as Geox.
  • A “just in case” nice outfit — because you might snag a seat at one of the hottest restaurants in town. That LBD is still a great go-to, and a cardigan always works and is easy to pack. Look for ones that are easy and light to pack.
  • Sunglasses + sunscreen (your glow-up deserves protection). I still love K-beauty brand BELIF’s Aqua Bomb Broad Spectrum SPF 45 with Niacinamide, as well as ALASTIN Skincare’s HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36
  • Knix undies – particularly their leakproof line (various options) for just in case moments. Also, they wash and dry well on vacation, so you won’t have to pack as many!

Tech & Entertainment for Woman’s Solo Travel

  • Kindle e-reader or book
  • Podcasts or playlists downloaded (Apple Podcasts or Spotify)
  • Translation app (if abroad)
  • Smart Watch! Yes, that Apple Watch comes in handy when navigating big cities or the countryside. I won’t leave home without it!
  • Journal for your memories (or doodles during long train rides)
  • A small camera for a change from your mobile phone – Fuji Instax has several fun options!

Woman’s Solo Travel Tips for Planning Ahead:

I always have the mentality to only bring necessities – think, would you be upset if something was lost or stolen? Leave fancy jewellery and handbags at home. You’ll be less of a target.

Check the local tourism website for what’s happening, as well as understanding local customs.

Be mindful of holidays – that could change your list of things to do.

Book local tours if available – I often choose one of the City Hop On Off bus tours for an overview of a city, then I know what I can return to on my own.

Respect the culture! Remember you’re not at home.

So, where in the world are we going next? Stay tuned!
