What is Heather Reading Now? June Books

This month’s top books are for our dads! If your dad was anything like mine, then they are prepared for everything. Usually that was because they had the same item in many different places. The pen in the coat pocket, shirt pocket, the car pen, the truck pen, the shed pen, the garage pen. Well replace that with handkerchief, measuring tape, screwdriver etc., and you get what I mean.

This month’s lesson is inspired by dad.

  • Have a book handy everywhere and anywhere

And this doesn’t have to mean a physical copy. I have books in multiple rooms, digital books on my phone and audiobooks at the ready. So, no matter where you are; in line at the grocery store, long car rides, kids’ baseball games, you have a book to crack open and start enjoying.

The following recommendations are reads that focus on unique father relationships or just might be a book your dad would enjoy.

Fiction Books

What Is She Hiding by Art Bell

This propulsive novel follows NYC lawyer Henry Gladstone, who one day gets a surprise visit from his ex-wife who he hasn’t heard from in years. What is even more surprising is the message she brings; hand over a quarter of a million dollars or they both die. Is she being serious and if so, how does he stay alive? If your dad is a fan of suspension this book is for him.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe

Margo comes from an unconventional family; one where she quickly understands she will have to make it on her own. When an affair leads to an unplanned pregnancy unemployed Margo realizes that she is going to need some help. Enter her estranged father Jinx, a former pro wrestler and addict. Will his advice from the world of wrestling help Margo stay afloat? Will they be able to mend their distant relationship? If your dad is a wrestling fan and enjoys sharp humor this book is for him.

The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave

Nora’s dad was loving but distant. He kept his finances and his different families separate. But after his suspicious death at his beloved cliffside home Nora and her estranged brother Sam believe it was anything but an accident. As they unravel the secrets and put together the pieces, they will also have to come to grips with the complicated relationships they each had with their dad. Another great mystery/suspense for dad to enjoy.

Non Fiction Books

Not a Very Good Murderer by Ronan Farrow

If your dad wants something quick and genre bending this Audible original is for him. NYT best selling author and Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter Ronan Farrow gives a fascinating look at unreliable sources and what it takes to uncover the truth. After a claim that former Miss Arizona Celia Doane had been sexually assaulted by Joe Biden, Farrow dives into the story only to uncover multiple alleged murder attempts on her two of her husbands. But are these allegations true?

Like Sucks: Memories and Introspections During the Great COVID Lockdown by PS Conway

For the busy dad who doesn’t have time for a full-length novel and his humor is more Seinfeld-esque then this collection of cynical reflections on the pandemic is perfect. Through a collection of satirical essays, Conway will have dad chuckling about lockdown life, politics and the human condition all in neat and tidy consumable chunks.
