SPF season is year-round, but in the hot summer months, it’s an absolute mandatory step in everyone’s skincare routine. In this guide, we’ll delve into the art of applying sunscreen with finesse and precision. By understanding the best practices for daily SPF use, you’ll be equipped to shield your skin effectively from the sun’s harmful rays. Read on to discover the key steps to achieving optimal sun protection.
Mastering Daily SPF Application: Shielding Your Skin with Expert Precision
SPF is a numerical measure that indicates the level of protection a sunscreen offers against UVB rays. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to ensure adequate protection against both UVB and UVA rays. You should also consider your skin type. Different skin types have varying levels of sensitivity to the sun. If you have fair or sensitive skin or are planning prolonged sun exposure, opt for a higher SPF to provide enhanced protection.
Timing Is Everything
Prior to applying sunscreen, cleanse your face and body gently to remove any dirt, oil, or sweat that may hinder absorption. Dry your skin thoroughly. Give it time! Apply sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. This allows the product to absorb into the skin fully, ensuring optimal protection.
We asked the experts! Bahar, a medical aesthetician from Bayview Village’s Hammam Spa shared her favourite sunscreen. Hands down, she adores La Roche-Posay Anthelios Lotion SPF 60 Sunscreen. This SPF is non-comedogenic, fragrance-free and paraben-free. It goes on quickly and absorbs in minutes. There’s no excuse for not applying this lightweight sunscreen.
Quantity matters. Use a generous amount of sunscreen to cover all exposed areas adequately. For the face, a nickel-sized amount is a good guideline. Don’t forget often neglected areas like the ears, neck, hands, and feet. Be sure to spread evenly. Start by applying sunscreen to your face, gently massaging using upward motions. For the body, work in sections, ensuring even coverage. Pay extra attention to areas prone to burning or those exposed to direct sunlight.
Time for a touch-up
Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if sweating heavily or swimming. Even water-resistant or waterproof sunscreens can lose effectiveness over time, so regular reapplication is essential. After engaging in activities that cause excessive sweating or water exposure, towel dry your skin before reapplying sunscreen. This ensures the product adheres properly for continued protection.
Sunscreen beyond Summer: Don’t limit SPF use to just sunny days
UV rays are present year-round, even on cloudy or overcast days. Make sunscreen a daily habit regardless of the weather or season. Besides sunscreen, consider incorporating other sun protection measures into your routine. Wear protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses to further shield yourself from the sun’s harmful effects.

Not only do they offer protection and help with preventing sun damage but some also do double, or even triple, duty. Sonya on our team tells us she’s always looking for skincare that can do more. Here are her most recent discoveries…
The latest innovation was discovered in Dermalogica’s Porescreen SPF 40 — a recently launched multi-benefit mineral sunscreen that delivers protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays while supporting healthy-looking pores. How? She tells us the lightweight lotion offers a blurring, primer-like effect when applied to the skin. It also has a hint of tint so skin appears more radiant. She loves this product as it doesn’t congest the pores.
