Every so often, a new restaurant comes along that truly blows your socks off. Last week, Riley’s Fish and Steak hosted an incredible series of media dinners, unveiling a reimagined take on the former Shore Club—one that embraces the idea of and, not just or. We’ve moved beyond labels; the term “steakhouse” now feels limiting, often reserved for just that—steaks.
Fish and Steak and Service and Stars
Riley’s is more than just a restaurant. With theatrical, tableside presentations across a range of dishes, it feels like culinary whiplash watching the team move seamlessly through the room. We’re not talking just Caesar salads either. Dishes like Lobster Pot Pie ($154) and Whole Roasted Chicken (below, $85) don’t just arrive; they are presented.
A tableside Prime Rib cart seems to play to the carnivores, but both a Hot and Cold offering for Seafood Towers sets the balance for the battle for surf versus turf. Executive Chef Scott Saunderson prides his menu on sourcing top-quality Canadian cuts, importing seafood from Nova Scotia and working with local farms here in Ontario.
The dishes achieve the intended outcome, acting as a celebration of their source and, in some cases, under the backdrop of presentation, a moment that is impossible to replicate at home. A gift of time together with someone else doing the heavy lifting.
Glowbal Restaurant Group is behind the project. They brought us Black + Blue, the sensational steakhouse, and now have plans for Riley’s to become more of an all-day offering. A Michelin nod for the Vancouver location only adds to the swagger for this new TO project.
Riley’s Fish and Steak Showcases Local Musicians
A green imprint with vines swaying from the ceiling gives greenhouse vibes. During our dinner, a jazz acoustic performance serenaded us from under a custom-built set of arches. The design is modern and luxurious. Happy hours here will feel Gatsby-esque, and no doubt many an engagement will be toasted here. The tables feel intimate, and yet grand, facing a centre stage.
The food here is, of course, meant to be shared. Sides like Lobster Mac & Cheese ($29) and Tempura Squash Rings ($15) are non-negotiable. Appetizers could easily make a meal. Wine, beer and cocktail menus will tickle your fancy, and tableside martinis are worth the indulgence.
Service is friendly and seems effortless, even on day one. Housed next to the Ritz Carlton, Riley’s will be humming with all the who’s who’s for a very long time.
