N2 Ice Cream lab has launched on Yonge Street in North York, ushering in a new cone to crush on just in time for summer. Instagram worthy walls? Check. Molecular infusions for instant ice creams? Yup. Okay, how about dousing Cheetos in liquid nitrogen? Absolutely. Baskin Robbins may have 31 flavours, but N2 Ice Cream boasts warning signs, so keep your cutesy free samples.
Built out of an old drum shop, the space is bright and airy, with an open food prep area allowing you a view to the science lab/kitchen. The menu offers the usual fruity flavours, like strawberry and mango, but also crowd pleasing cookie dough combos and chocolately confections. Each comes with a syringe full of extra flavour, a cutesy effect that gives ice cream an edge- this isn’t the nostalgic cones of your childhood, this is one bad-ass cone you don’t want to mess with, or accidentally spill- liquid nitrogen isn’t a summer skin care look you want on repeat.
Decked out in whipped cream and fresh berries, the Strawberry Pop-Ice ($7.80) is exactly that, layers of instant ice cream, berries and fun. The buried berries are a bit of a fail though, they suffer from frost bite and become frozen and forgettable.
Ditto for the Mango Pop-Ice ($7.80). It starts off as a hit, but again, frozen chunks of mango are off-putting, buried under science and not function.
But all is redeemed with the Matcha Red Bean ($6.30) with it’s on trend charcoal cone and red bean garnish. It’s matcha-magic, not too sweet with perfect texture profiles for a DIY cone, replete with coconut flavour syringe kicker.
But really, you didn’t come for ice cream did you? If Cheetos are your favourite snack, but the target temperature is just too ‘wintery’ N2 has got you covered. Smoking Cheetos ($4.60) offer a precision dose of liquid nitrogen delivers a crunch like you’ve never imagined, because why would you? Spearing each nuclear-orange hued Cheeto, then flicking it carefully as to not deliver a burn like no other, this crispy bite even nets a nifty exhale, so get that Boomerang ready!
