Close to Banff National Park, Canmore is a beautiful spot with a small-town feel. Surrounded by majestic mountains and scenic lakes, summer is a great time to visit (Canmore Folk Music Festival anyone?). Well-priced flights and excellent options for extended family vacations make Canmore a great choice for travel in Canada.

Some of Canmore’s top adventures are hiking, biking, running, and canoeing. With Basecamp Resorts acting as our clubhouse, Canmore was ours to explore. From girl’s getaways to epic adventures here are a few wonderful ways to enjoy Canmore.

FORTY-EIGHT HOURS IN BANFF’S BACKYARD

With dedicated biking lanes and trails for miles, Canmore is easy to get around with or without a vehicle. Staying central makes sense, and allows easy access to Banff National Park. Local hikes near Bow Valley Provincial Park should not be overlooked. Nearby Mt Rundle is a challenging hike at 9,672 feet at the top, with various routes to get you there.

Spend the day climbing and hiking, before tucking into the comfortable accommodations at Basecamp Resorts. There are a few options under the brand’s umbrella in Canmore, including the cozy Lodge, the upscale Suites closer to town, and our pick, the perfect mix of both at Resorts, right on Bow Valley Trail.

Having your own space means you can really rest and recuperate, maximizing your outdoor time for adventures, instead of refuelling. Stock your kitchen with healthy eats and treats and reserve your free time for the great outdoors. A rooftop hot tub awaits to temper any sore muscles (hello glutes!) and get you back in form for tomorrow’s challenges.

The townhome is quiet, clean and feels like home. Ample dining and living space on the main floor offer a work-from-anywhere scenario for extended (or interrupted) holidays. (Check rates & availability here).

CANMORE IS MORE THAN JUST MOUNTAINS

Canmore’s main downtown area is a short walk away, with excellent cafes, restaurants, shops and art galleries. Book in for a yoga flow at the very zen The Yoga Lounge for downward dog poses with mountain views at your feet.

Memorable dining awaits, including buzzy new Bridgette Bar, ample tacos y tequila at Cabeza Grande and Grizzly Paw Pub for the best fish and chips. Bagels are top notch too, and Basecamp Resorts happens to be situated right next to Rocky Mountain Bagel Company for excellent coffees and yes, amazing bagels too.

While shopping is not the main event here, don’t miss the quaint shops and the opportunity to chat locals up. We happened upon Sweet Home on Main for some western looks, and got the skinny on off-the-beaten-path hikes and how to avoid bears. Win!

ALBERTA BOUND, ANYTIME OF YEAR

POW days may reign supreme in this ski village, but summer is a prime time to enjoy easy access to Canmore’s beauty. Tap into the local spirit of just being outside. With clean, fresh air as your guide, we discovered more than just the scenery, but a little about ourselves too. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone physically (okay, and mentally) has many rewards.

But stopping for a rest at the end of the day is the balance that makes it an actual vacation.
