I’ll be blunt. I haven’t written many blogs in recent years, because, well, I tend to like to write about my kids. Now that they’re old enough to read, they probably won’t want their mother writing about them online.

What I will say is that I was re-married less than a year ago and blending families is tough work. I mean, really tough. My eight-year-old has been having a particularly hard time lately. He’s been challenging at the best of times so in addition to adapting my parenting style, I also wanted to build in some good one-on-one bonding time during his March Break. It was literally what the doctor ordered and what I think we truly needed.

I took him to White Oaks Resort in Niagara for a night. It’s one of my favourite places and just a short drive from Toronto (about 1 hour, 20 minutes from home). I’ve been several times. The food is amazing, and there are tons of great workouts to choose from at the fitness club. Since my son and I have recently taken up squash, it’s also the perfect place to get in a lesson.

From the moment we arrived, we felt at home. We had lunch overlooking the tennis courts at Play restaurant. I had a salad with a side of salmon (very healthy!) and my son ate from the kids menu—he had tons to choose from as well. Then he had a private lesson on one of the many squash courts at White Oaks. We then walked across the street to the Outlet Collection at Niagara and turned that experience into a workout as well. We were excited for the sales at Nike, Adidas, Lululemon and Moose Knuckles.Lugging our purchases back to our room, we hung out and played some really fun board games together. Our favourite was Blokus—sort of like the board game version of Tetris. We also played Dos, which is like UNO but with two decks of cards. I won both games! BTW, we found this sweet spot that reminds us about family time and reconnecting with games we love. We’re not talking about screen time but real board games! Link here: Mattel

My son is a foodie, so we had an early dinner at the five-star LIV Restaurant. He ordered the lamb chops and I had bison steaks. Both meals were delicious. He raved about the meat and potatoes but also loved his amuse bouche and the passionfruit palate cleanser they gave between courses. In fact, he loved the sorbet so much he had another round for dessert! As if the day wasn’t full enough, we played in the pool together after dinner and relaxed in the hot tub. Then it was movie time in our room. We cuddled and ate snacks—hopefully he won’t read this embarrassing fact!

In the morning, it was back to LIV for a healthy breakfast, followed by basketball in the open gym and a game of ping pong. Sadly, he won this time!By the time were headed home, my son wrapped his arms around me. “Thank you, Mommy. I had so much fun.”

I’d had a lot of fun too. We laughed and enjoyed each other’s company. It was a great reminder of how much fun we have together and how much we love each other. Lucky for me, he asked to go back to White Oaks. Of course, I promised we would.

White Oaks Resort is a Four Diamond, Five Star luxury resort nestled on 13 acres of land. It is located in the Niagara region within close proximity to Niagara-on-the-Lake and is a convenient getaway from Toronto. It’s a great quick getaway for families and with summer just around the corner, parents may be interested in checking out the day camps offered — you know, so the adults can go and tour the wineries while the kids are having fun at the resort.
