The first time I had Halo Top ice cream was while I was visiting a friend in Los Angeles a few years ago. She had scooped some into a bowl for me and I had no idea what it was at first and it wasn’t really top of conversation. But it was good. When I went back home I was reminded of the goodness on a summer’s day. I texted her and asked her what the brand was so I could pick some up.
She mentioned Halo Top and I went searching only to find it wasn’t available here. Apparently I wasn’t the only one searching. So, flash forward to now…like, literally this month, and by popular demand they the guilt-free ice cream tubs are here!
What’s the scoop? The LA based company was founded in 2011 by Justin Woolverton, a former lawyer turned ice-cream lover. He was in search of a premium ice cream that didn’t have the high calorie count but still tasted good. But his entrepreneurial spirit let him to making his own with premium ingredients.
Since then he’s somehow found that sweet spot and a huge fan following. Halo Top earned the recognition as TIME Magazine’s “25 Best Inventions of 2017” and became the best-selling ice cream pint in the U.S. last year.
Each serving has about 80-100 calories and only 6 to 8 grams of sugar. Hallelujah! But what’s the magic in these delicious flavours that makes them have that real ice cream flavour and texture? I skimmed through the labels to find skim milk, eggs, organic cane sugar, organic stevia extract, dietary fibre and milk protein concentrate along side the ingredients that make the individual flavours. So, it’s low calorie, low carbs but higher in protein than other ice cream brands out there. Gotcha. Cue the harps.
To say they have a cult-like following is an understatement. When I had posted a photo of a pint of “Pancakes & Waffles” flavour on my personal social pages, my friends were already buzzing asking me where to get it.
Halo Top is bringing 12 of their fan-favourites to Canada including:
