It has been raining a lot this summer, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun. A light summer rain can be refreshing and fun but for those crazy summer storms, we need to get creative. Whether you are up at the cottage with friends and family or cooped up at home, here are some of my best ideas for making lemonade out of lemons.
Cooking Challenge:
We love shows like “America’s Worst Cook” and “Nailed It”. Have a friendly cooking competition where family members team up to create unique dishes using ingredients available at the cottage. Or, if you want to make it even more fun, do a “Nailed It” style decorating contest, the messier the better.
Indoor Scavenger Hunt:
Design an indoor scavenger hunt with clues leading to hidden treasures or treats around the cottage.
Storytelling Session:

Encourage family members to make up and share their spookiest ghost stories. We once took my son’s entire class on a haunted walk of our neighbourhood, stopping at random homes, and making up scary stories about each one. It was the BEST Halloween ever.
Family Talent Show:
Host a talent show where everyone can showcase their unique skills, whether it’s singing, dancing, or magic tricks.
Rainy Day Spa:
Transform a space into a relaxing spa and enjoy pampering activities like facials, foot massages, and DIY spa treatments. Little kids LOVE to play salon so get them in on the action.
DIY Science Experiments:
Conduct simple science experiments that can be done indoors, such as making a volcano with baking soda and vinegar or creating a rainbow with a prism. If you have a roll of Mentos, game on!
Indoor Campfire:
If you have a fireplace or a fire pit indoors, gather around it and roast marshmallows for s’mores and share campfire stories. If it’s too hot for an actual fire, get that roaring fire going on your tv or laptotp.
Family Karaoke:
Host a karaoke session and let each family member showcase their singing talent or have a fun lip-sync battle. If you don’t have an actual karaoke machine, there are tons of karaoke apps out there to fake it.
Binge Watch Something:
When all else fails, binge watch a series you have meaning to get around too.
Rainy Nature Walk:

Put on raincoats, boots, and grab umbrellas for everyone, then head out for a nature walk in the rain. Explore the sights and sounds of the rain-soaked environment, such as puddle jumping, observing raindrops on leaves, and listening to the soothing sounds of rain falling. Get muddy and wet and let your inner kid shine!
