A new feature-length film titled, Brunello: The Gracious Visionary, has arrived that offers more insight behind the iconic Italian designer and how he became one of the most highly respected designer software our time.
Brunello Cucinelli’s Upbringing
Cucinelli grew up in the small Umbrian village of Castel Rigone, Italy, where his family lived in a rustic farmhouse surrounded by fields. They had a daily life of tending to the land and lived a very modest and simple life. There were no luxuries. No electricity. Not even a television. But this simple life was what he knew. It was a good life for a child who didn’t know any better. His natural relationship with poverty instilled an awareness of what the family did have. Love, support, and appreciation for what was naturally gifted around them. Although his family didn’t have much, they had everything they needed.
As he entered in teen years, his father relocated the family to accept a job in a factory, an experience that deeply influenced Cucinelli after witnessing the difficult conditions workers often faced. Those early memories helped shape his philosophy of “humanistic capitalism”. That is, the belief that businesses can be both profitable and compassionate.
Today, the company still believes in this philosophy. It is woven into every aspect of this luxury brand. Its commitment in creating a workplace that values the well-being and respect of its employees is very much part of the company’s success story.
Beautiful in Simplicity
In the film, Cucinelli credits his father for teaching him about beauty. His recollection of helping his father out in the field guiding ox to plow soil was the kind of attention to detail that influenced with him. When he questioned his father about why it was important to have straight lines in the soil, he responded with “because they are more beautiful that way.”
Throughout the film we can see and feel such contentment and simplicity in his life. Farming was his family’s life in Italy. But it was fascinating to learn about Brunello Cucinelli’s interest in philosophers that helped shaped his outlook in life and his work. He’s often quoting philosophers from Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Seneca and even Confucius.

The film also tells the story of how he met Federica and fell in love. She was credited for introducing him to the world of fashion. Her father owned a small textile shop where she worked and eventually opened a clothing shop.
At this time, Brunello had accompanied her on shopping excursions and modelled for the line. From there, he had access into the inner world of fashion that piqued his interest and launched his passion into the world that begun with cashmere.
And yes, they are still in love to this day
