Some of you may know that we’ve added a cute, but a handful, puppy to our family. Overwhelming is an understatement. We’ve been learning so much about our “fur”ever friend and we’ve been fortunate to have such great weather to help us get through this zany early months! Not gonna lie, I had no idea what I was getting into. I have so many questions about everything! But like having a kid (and yes, I can say, it’s just as intense) there is so much information out there and just as many people expressing their opinions. All with good intentions, I know. Every time I go out with the pup for a walk without fail, there’s someone who has to comment about how hot it is. “He needs a drink!” people would stop and tell me as I pull out his very own water bottle which always leads to a surprise that he’s got his own water bottle specially designed for pets.  Then I found out about PetSafe® Brand ‘s most recent campaign about recognizing the signs of dehydration in our furry dog and cat friends during these hot summer days that go well into the month of September and it caught my attention.

In a recent study conducted by PetSafe® Brand, it was revealed that 66 percent of Canadians were unaware that lethargy or unusual lack of energy indicates dehydration in their pets.
I was surprised to learn about the most common signs – that are not that easy to spot for first time dog owners. But the  following percentages of respondents were aware of these common signs of dehydration in their pets:
  • Sunken eyes – 32 percent
  • Decreased skin elasticity – 29 percent
  • Loss of appetite – 27 percent
  • Depression – 17 percent
Alarmingly, 8 percent of those polled did not recognize any of the signs of dehydration in pets.
Whether active or calm, pets need plenty of water to stay hydrated. According to PetSafe, cats require 300ml daily and dogs between 600ml and 2,500 ml depending on their size, as pet water requirements are approximately 70ml per kilogram.
On top of identifying the signs of dehydration and ensuring your pet is consuming its proper daily intake of water, here are other tips for keeping your pet hydrated:
  • Monitor the weather and exercise pets during the coolest parts of the day
  • Maintain a fresh water supply
  • Know your pet’s safety limits and the signs of dehydration
To keep your pet hydrated, PetSafe® Brand offers several products to help Canadians keep their pets from feeling parched. Of course, I had no idea about these fountains until I started chatting with other pet owners who swear by them. Keeping fresh running water is key for many furry friends.
Here are a few fountains for dogs and cats that are worth looking into…
