Look ladies, none of us like stalking about this stuff, but let’s get real. At least * half of us will have a urinary tract infection at least once in their life or, if you are like me, you will experience a number of them and trust me, they are not fun. Every day the ** average adult passes about a litre and a half to two litres of urine through the bladder so we need to keep our bladders, kidneys and urinary tracts in tip top shape. Here are some tips to help you beat that 50% stat and stay UTI free.
Getting enough exercise can also help prevent bladder issues and you should add in some pelvic floor exercises while you are it and strengthen those muscles that keep pee from leaking when you sneeze, laugh too hard or cough – NOT THAT I KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT.
DON’T HOLD IT IN
Holding in your pee for too long starts to weaken your bladder muscles and that, in turn, makes you more susceptible to infections. If I actually have to remind you to wipe front to back to avoid bacteria from getting into your urethra, I don’t know what to say to you. Just do it.
PEE AFTER SEX EVEN IF IT RUINS THE MOOD. EVERY TIME.
Speaking of sex, if you use condoms make sure that the ones you are using are spermicide free as it can make women more at risk for UTIs. Frequent sexual activity can push bacteria into the urethra – anyone ever heard of Honeymoon cystitis? Well, it’s thing, so PEE AFTER SEX
Wear loose fitting cotton underwear and if you keep getting infections, you might want to go up a size in those jeans. Your mysterious lady parts need to breath and tight jeans and nylon panties can trap moisture and make a nice little bacterial breeding ground down there.
The best way to keep your bladder and your urinary tract running like a well oiled engine is to stay hydrated. I am talking about water, not wine because too much alcohol is the next thing to watch out for. Sadly, excessive alcohol consumption is not your bladder’s friend and if you find yourself prone to infections, just upping your water consumption and cutting down your booze intake could make a world of difference. Maybe throw some probiotics into your diet in the form of plain Greek yogurt, kefir or kimchi for good measure.
You should avoid scented soaps and all of those deodorant sprays and other products that promise to make your lady station smell like a summer garden. Find some gentle, non scented cleanser and let your wondrous body take care of it’s flora and fauna by itself. Sisters, a healthy vagina smells just fine the way nature intended.
Okay, so now you have done all of these things and you still find yourself feeling like you have to pee but nothing comes out and when you DO pee, it might be really dark and smell like a bad batch of kombucha. You might even experience some burning or stinging when you go and you think you might have cystitis, the medical term for bladder inflammation. Mild cystitis will go away on it’s own in 4 to 9 days but if it’s moderate or worse, it can come with stomach cramps, lower back pain and even a fever. If any of that stuff happens, you need to go see your doctor, ASAP. An untreated infection can lead to more serious kidney issues, an nobody has time for that.
To relieve the symptoms of mild cystitis you can take something like Cystoplus, a Canadian product that helps deal with the unpleasant symptoms of an irritated or inflammed bladder. If you take Cystoplus and the symptoms don’t go away or worsen, call your doctor as you may require a round of antibiotics. While Cystoplus is not a treatment for cystitis it can help relieve the symptoms and since you don’t need a prescription, it can make you feel a little better while you wait for the antibiotics to kick in and you can still use this stuff to help with the symptoms while you take them.
