Like everything else that’s been happening these past few months, Father’s Day (June 21) will be slightly different this year. While we won’t be taking Dad to brunch, out to the ballpark to catch a game or heading out to the annual car show, here are some gift ideas to help celebrate his day right at home.

BOOKS:

Since many of us were hooked on the Netflix docuseries “Last Dance” that offered us a glimpse of one of NBA’s greatest players of all time, Michael Jordan, we’ve been wanting more. Several books are available for fans of all ages. But where the series left off may just be the perfect point to read on! When Nothing Else Matters: Michael Jordan’s Last Comeback by Michael Leahy is about the two years MJ came out of his second retirement at the age of 38 to play with the Washington Wizards. However, the book doesn’t exactly put the basketball star on a shiny pedestal. Not a new book but for those curious about what happened with the Wizards makes this a worthy read.

Dad is Amazon obsessed? He may be interested in the reading Bezonomics: How Amazon is Changing Our Lives And What The Best Companies in the World are Learning From it. An in-depth, revelatory, and unbiased look at Amazon’s world-dominating business model, the current competitors either imitating or trying to outfox Amazon, and the ways Bezonomics is shaping the life of every American consumer—from Brian Dumaine, award-winning Fortune magazine writer.

Famous dads are just like other dads, sort of.  To Me He Was Just Dad: Stories of Growing Up With Famous Fathers is a collection of 40 stories by sons and daughters of famous dads that offers a glimpse of life beyond the public eye. Written by Joshua David Stein, editor at large at Fatherly and host of The Fatherly Project. Also downloadable on your favourite Kobo eReader.

MUSIC:

For his workouts playlists, meetings and podcast favourites, give dad the latest Apple AirPod Pros  for easy listening. We love the noise cancellation option and transparency option on these upgraded devices. The customizable fit makes it even more comfortable for everyday use. They’re also sweat resistant. A hands-down favourite gift.

If the dad in your life has turned back to loving vinyl, consider getting his retro favourites online from Sonic Boom. The iconic record store has turned to web sales and curbside pick up. Have an artist in mind? Maybe that old Supertramp record? New and previously enjoyed discs available (and also really cool collection of retro-designed t-shirts!) Call/email them to find out what they have on hand.

GADGETS:

Now that we’ve deferred our travel and entertainment budgets we’re also looking for ways to enhance our home theatre experiences. You can wow dad with an Epson EF-100 Mini-Laser Streaming Projector with Android TV for the next televised sporting event or family movie night. The compact projector allows streamers to enjoy their content anywhere with their favourite apps (hulu, YouTube, Netflix, HBO, WatchESPN and more)- even outside and up to 150″ on any wall.

Connecting with Dad, especially if he’s a senior, has never been more important. Send Dad a visual reminder that you care, with the gift a Google Nest Hub Max. With a breadth of extras, this little gadget can play his fave tunes at the drop of a hat, explore photos of trips and loved ones, make video calls with the Google Duo app, play Jeopardy, and also doubles as a home security device. Get yours from Staples for sanitary free shipping!

Now that the warmer weather is here, so are the summer fruits and veggies. Dad may be inspired to up his smoothie game at home now to try and stay on that healthy eating plan. The Nutri Ninja Pro is a powerful personal size machine that extracts nutrients out of fresh fruits and delivers all the goodness any time of day. It also crushes through seeds, ice, fruit skin for a smoother consistency.

If dad can’t get through a day without his caffeine fix then the Nespresso Vertuo Next machine will take good care of him. With five cup sizes and a roster of premium roasts to choose from, he’ll enjoy his java without missing a zoom meeting. Also great for experimenting with the hottest new summer coffee based drinks. We are doing our own twist with the Dalgona trend here…martini anyone?

Does Dad love to keep his car shiny clean? Then he’ll appreciate the Shark WANDVAC that’s perfectly compact. The cord-free handheld vacuum is lightweight at 1. 4lbs with a sleek ergonomic design. It also comes with a duster crevice tool to get into those hard to reach places. It comes with a charging dock for fast recharging. Easy to clean too.

Keeping fit is top of mind for many dads and whether he’s working on his health goals in the backyard or going the distance with the family dog outdoors, the Fitbit Charge 4 might just be what he needs to keep track. This latest evolution of the popular health and fitness tracker offers a deeper understanding of your body and overall health. Packed with Fitbit’s most advanced technology, dad can push his fitness goals further. Now with built-in GPS and new Active Zone Minutes for more personalized guidance to help optimize activity. We love that it offers up to 7 days of battery life. It’s also water-resistant up to 50 metres.

Dad doesn’t need to share this great on-the-go device. The all-new Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet is the latest entry in the tablet market is designed for entertainment at a surprisingly affordable price (recently spotted on amazon.ca for $109.00 for 32 GB). It’s powerful enough for all his streaming needs — including access to Amazon Prime Video shows and other content streaming services. Enjoy reading the hottest bestsellers, play games, and more with wifi connection. Yes, he can still make Zoom calls if needed. The sound is pretty amazing too!  This Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet offers a vibrant 8″ HD display and up to 12 hours battery charge.

If Dad is into baking (hello sourdough!) or new to the grain game, a new collection of Chef Bruno Feldeisen’s baking recipes has just hit the (online) shops. French baking classics like Meringues and a distinctly Canadian twist on Crème Brûlées make for a sweet summer. Baking with Bruno is available at Indigo.
