East End Escapes- Alter Leslieville is Our New Favourite

Contrast therapy continues to gain traction in the wellness world, particularly in Toronto. With its new east-end outpost, Alter Leslieville presents itself as a quiet cocoon — a place to slow down, reset, and truly unwind. It’s a welcome addition to the neighbourhood, offering exactly the kind of restorative escape that feels both timely and needed. Drawing on the spirit of its original College Street location, Alter is gently reshaping expectations around what a sauna session can and should be.

Making a Splash on Queen East

Brand identity-wise, Alter is kind of like the sophisticated older sister to your Othership-type spots. The energy is a little calmer, more intentional, and the process feels more methodical. Or perhaps that was just our flight path during our self-led session. The beauty of this self-led practice allows for extra time where you need it most.

Starting in the tea lounge, guests are encouraged to linger over a hot cuppa and embrace the slower pace. The east end offers a lovely respite from the downtown core, with a steady hum of streetcars acting as the only echo of life that awaits beyond the glass door.

Alter Leslieville Tea Lounge

Founded by four close-knit friends – Ujwal, Aleya, Melissa, and Tyler- the intention here is to really be present and flow through the space at your own discretion. There’s no pressure to plunge or push to stay past your prime in the sauna, either. Alter Leslieville also features its own ice-bucket challenge, a chilly dousing and quick splash that is a favourable option to submerging yourself all the way.

The land of fire and ice – Iceland is Perfect for Solo Travel

Of course, that is a popular aspect of contrast therapy sessions. Here, there are two plunges to try, ranging in temperatures from 2°C to 10°C. A dedicated sauna master is there to guide you between the hot and cold, including during the cold plunge. Adding a lovely aromatic element to the sauna session, snowballs are introduced periodically.

There’s a second ‘wet’ lounge space flanked between the sauna and plunges. It’s a perfect pivot spot to take a rest between the hot and cold.
