Cricut Joy Xtra DIY: Fast & Easy Dog Bandana

Having a Cricut Joy Xtra has me constantly dreaming up new things to make. It’s honestly wild how even the simplest ideas can turn into “Wow, that looks so professional?!” projects (direct quote from my friends). From cards and decorative jars to plant pots, mugs, decals, and stickers, it’s been an incredible creative space to explore. And because I have a not-so-secret love for all things crafty, I recently added the Cricut EasyPress Mini to my growing collection. My latest creation? A festive holiday bandana for my dog—because of course the dog needed custom merch, right? I was amazed at how quick and easy it was to put together.

If you’re new to Cricut, I totally get how it can feel a little intimidating at first — but don’t let that stop you! Between the built-in tips on the site and the endless YouTube tutorials (seriously, there’s one for everything), you’ll be crafting with confidence in no time. Trust yourself, dive in, and once you get past the “how-to” stage, it’s smooth sailing—and seriously addictive!

Here are my step-by-step instructions on how to make a fast and easy Dog Bandana:

What you need:

Dog Bandana Materials:

  • Smart Iron-On Heat Transfer Vinyl for Cricut Joy Xtra – make sure you pick the size that is ideal for the machine – I’m working on a sheet that fits 24 cm x 16 cm. If the sheet is larger, then simply cut to fit.
  • Fabric Bandana (I found these on Amazon)

Cricut Design Instructions:

Go into Design Space to start a new project. Make sure you connect it to your Cricut Joy Xtra.

Measure out the space you need for your text and/or image. I measured out a working space of 6 inches tall and 19 inches wide to fit onto an average-sized bandana. And keep in mind the size of the design on the actual bandana corner area you’d like to cover.

Once you’re happy with your design, make sure it will fit onto the vinyl sheet for your machine. Size to the area you would like to cover on the bandana.

Press MAKE IT to prepare the machine for cutting. You’ll get to review your design here and see how it will fit on the sheet before you cut.

CUT Instructions on the Cricut Joy Xtra:

When using this material, you won’t need to load the material with a mat (on the left side, you’ll see “without mat”).

You’ll also want to push ON the MIRROR tab. Why? Because it will need to be cut on the reverse to be ironed on.

After ensuring the MIRROR tab is on, select the material you are using. In this case, Smart Iron-On Heat Transfer Vinyl. If something isn’t fitting properly, now you can go back and make any changes.

Once you’re happy with the design, prepare for print. For this easy project, you don’t have to worry about changing the cutting tip. The instructions will tell you to feed the material to the Cricut Joy Xtra. SHINY SIDE DOWN as you gently push the sheet into the machine. It will grab it automatically. Then press cut!

Seriously the weeding part is my favourite

Prep to Iron-on:

Cut around the image/text you are working with a little clearance so you will later be able to lift off the fabric.

With your weeding tool, carefully take off the excess material that won’t be ironed on. I start at the corner, and it will easily drag off. Go slow while weeding out the finer bits. What is left behind should be your actual text/design.

Start warming up your Cricut EasyPress Mini and work area with the heat-safe pad. I used the highest setting.

Using the Cricut EasyPress Mini, iron the bandana fabric surface where your design will be.

Place the design transfer onto the fabric (the plastic protective part will be on top. With this material, it’s safe to put heat on.

Then, with the Cricut EasyPress Mini, move it over the top of the design. But keep moving, don’t let it just sit in one place. Do this for about 30 seconds. Carefully lift the corner off to see if it’s adhered to the fabric. There are iron-on tips within the design space as well.

Carefully remove the plastic sheet to transfer the design. Give the design a quick final press and flip the fabric over to gently press heat on the back side. Let cool!

Beginner Tips Using the Cricut Joy Xtra:

If you’re just starting out, go for simple designs with fewer details and bolder fonts.

Because the sheet is larger, you can also do multiple small designs on one page.

Need design inspo? Head to their design space. It’s easy to search up images and fonts. If you have a subscription, it will open up more designs you can use.

Make sure you have lots of desk space to work on.

There are so many great ideas, designs and YouTube tutorials out there! If you’ve ever wanted to join this maker space, it’s really a great community. Support is there, and this is a great little project to start with using the Cricut Joy Xtra! Check out cricut.com for more inspo!
