When it comes to the summer hair trends many of us recognize how the temperature and humidity can affect our hair. Just like any other part of our body, we find ways to take care. How many of us result to throwing our hair up into a bun or ponytail when humidity strikes? At a recent visit to Calia Hair for the launch of Authentic Beauty Concept, I learned how to best care for our hair and what is trending for the summer.

Located mid-town in the Yonge and Lawrence area, Calia Hair has become a go-to for many in the city. Owners Peter and Luisa Ciardulli, and their team, are not just known for being on top of cut, style and colour trends but also in hair care. They believe that hair and scalp care is integral to having healthy and dreamy strands from root to end.

Authentic Beauty Concept is a Vegan Haircare Line

They recently brought in Authentic Beauty Concept — a vegan line of hair care for a wide range of hair textures and styles. Free of silicones, sulfates, parabens, and artificial colourants and mineral oils, this line uses ingredients that are up to 95% of natural origins. This includes coconut and jojoba oils, shea butter, and Fairtrade violet rice extract. Plant-based ingredients are also used for smoothing hair instead of silicones. The line also includes sustainable and biodegradable ingredients like guar that is both mindful of and better for, the environment.

Peter is also the Director Stylist of Calia Hair. He is known for his sincerity and professionalism with his clientele. It’s also evident in the team he brings into the fold as well as the returning clientele. They listen and advise with a personal touch on every visit.

As we transition into the season, the team can help freshen up looks and styles that best suit individual facial structure as well as lifestyle. Peter also tells me that there are many ways to maintain a healthier look and feel to our hair during the summer months.

Go Natural in the Summer:

Embrace your natural texture and make the most of your hair type by using the right shampoo, conditioners, and products. Adjust your home hair care routine to suit the changing climate. During the summer months, consider using leave-in products such as conditioners or stylers with smoothing, anti-frizz ingredients that penetrate the cuticle and seal it when heat is applied. This will enhance shine, provide better control over your texture, and help keep frizz at bay.

Natural Drying Process:

Allow your hair to air dry naturally, and then use a curling iron or flat iron to enhance and style as desired. Remember to prime your hair with a leave-in conditioner, smoothing balm, or serum—and most importantly, use a heat protector—to avoid over-processing or drying it out. This process is suitable for all hair lengths—short, medium, and long.

Hairstyles Great for Summer:

Consider getting a shag haircut or adding more layers to your hair for versatile styling options. With additional layers, whether they’re face-framing or part of a shag style, you’ll have more flexibility to braid your hair, clip it up while leaving sections down to showcase accent layers or create curtain bangs around your face. The updated shag cut can be a wash-and-go style.

Detox and Conditioning:

During summer, your hair is exposed more frequently to pool and lake water, as well as other environmental elements. It’s important to detox your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup, especially after exposure to chlorine. This gives your hair a fresh start by eliminating any residue. Deep conditioning treatments are also crucial. If you choose not to rinse out your conditioner or treatment, apply it, comb through it, and style your hair into a ponytail or high bun with a side part for a chic look. Leave the treatment in until your next wash to keep your hair nourished and fresh.

How Often Should You Wash:

The days of washing your hair every day are behind us. Washing your hair 2 to 3 times a week is sufficient and beneficial for both your hair and scalp. This routine also helps maintain longevity for those who also color and prevents over-drying of your hair and scalp.
