October means one thing in this house. Hockey and basketball season is back, oh and Halloween is pretty cool too. Fall colours popping act as a reminder snow is on the way, so if you’re one of those ‘hunker down and hide types’ then this is your siren call to get out there, it won’t get better than this for the foreseeable future. Fall for me is prime frolic time, I love the brisk fresh air, and dazzling colours that remind me why I live somewhere with four seasons. Too much? Nah, never enough, but if you’re looking for other reasons to fall for fall, here’s October’s menu of amazingness, buckle up, there’s heaps of gallivanting to do this month.
#FNLROM, this Friday October 4th, and rolling each week, until November 29th. Themes include ‘Nuit Noire’, piggybacking onto the Red Bull worthy Nuite Blanche, which takes place the following evening, with art installations throughout the city.
Book tickets now to the upcoming Culture Pack, a curated evening of art meets socializing- up close and personal with playwrights, actors, directors and more. Ticket packages for the three curated events include admission to the theatre, for plays such as A Streetcar Named Desire, dinner, drinks and intimate after-show discussions with the cast.
And since restaurants are often celebrated for being the latest fad, it’s great to toast to local ocean hero Oyster Boy, who are celebrating 20 years in the city!
The upcoming FoodBall is a culinary event that will see chefs from around the world creating unique and other-worldly dishes in support of Sinai Health Foundation. The event takes place on October 4th at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Centre, and happily, all tickets are sold out for this charitable event.
Halloween, everyone’s favourite unofficial holiday, takes a paws with Howl’oween at The Bentway. The costume party and parade will feature prizes, loot bags and games, and if you walk on two instead of four, a ‘yappy‘ hour bar. The event is free to attend and takes place on October 26th.
Bring the family to Wahlburgers this Saturday October 26th from 2pm-6pm for Wahloween bash! Kids can score some tricks and treats, and you can hammer down a burger in relative peace and quiet. Face painting, DJ and half-priced Sangria put the toast in even the most unruly ghost.
Daniel Boulud is hosting a future is female event at his very own Cafe Boulud. Three leading female chefs will takeover his cafe on October 30th to create dishes in a collaborative effort, with Ivanca Raca, Nuit Regular, and Katie Ardington sharing the stove, and Southbrook Vineyards winemaker Ann Sperling spilling the good stuff. Tickets are $195, and unlike Open Kitchen’s efforts, have no clear charitable component. Sigh.
We love a good partnership, and if you can work together and live together, and run a new successful restaurant, you’re doing more than a few things right. Sanja Topić-Zukanović and Alen Zukanović, bring Bosnian eats to Kingston Road to Somun Superstar.
Jen Agg’s Bar Vendetta, housed in her old ‘hoof spot, is now open. Can’t wait to scope out her takes on the classics, featuring a daily muffuletta sandwich, and loads and loads of fresh pastas. Oh and late night nachos, we’re in love already.
Realsports is reopening after a recent renovation. I guess the Raptors in the playoffs left us all a little tired and haggard looking. No word on how many more pixels are plastered on the walls, but we expect great things for this upcoming Leafs/Raptors run.
The most adorable coffee shop to hit North York just swung it’s might doors open, just south of Sheppard right on Yonge Street. Second floor Another Land Coffee is making coffee lovers swoon with their tidy space, using Blackbird Bread for their on trend avo-toasts.

Yonge and Eglinton will welcome Cass Avenue opening soon. The self-proclaimed snack bar will be bringing small bites and cocktails to this bustling corridor. Chef Vittorio Colacitti says the concept is a borrowed a little from D-Town.
Nodo, the Junction darling, has it’s eyes on the east side. Leslieville will welcome Nodo soon in the former location of Lambretta. Nodo is notable for its classic Italian eats made from scratch, a safe bet for Queen East.
Leslieville darling Ascari’s has now opened their second restaurant, this time on King West, with a 120-seat concept set to steal hearts and sway King Street eaters away from the Kit Kat, I mean, obviously.
Gordons Pub in Leslieville is just finishing the signage, so look for pints and proper pub food to hit the east end later this month.
by CHLOE.‘s 16th location is opening in Yorkdale Shopping Centre next month. The plant based eatery is massive in the US, with an almost cult-like following for the chain that only began in 2015. A second location is already in the works for the Financial District right downtown. They’ve set a date, look for it to launch October 17th.
DASHA, a new concept by Chef Akira Back is now open on King West. His self-titled affair at The Bisha Hotel has been a fave haunt of ours, and now DASHA also promises to bring the raccous, with a karaoke bar part of the experience! Dōmo arigatō, Mr. Roboto!
Madame Levant is the latest eatery planning to pop up on Gerrard offering coffee and bites in the east end. Look for this new concept to open later this month.
The Butcher Chef is a beefy new restaurant ready to launch on Harbour Street. Not much is out on this beast of a restaurant, but we’ll keep this one on the radar.
Queue De Cheval is setting up shop in theatre district, look for this beast to open in the coming months right in the base of a glitzy condo building. The Quebecois steakhouse will put STK and The Keg on high alert, but Jacob’s could care less, since, well, it’s Jacob’s.
Iconic Italian eatery, La Vecchia Ristorante has been open for a staggering 24 years at Yonge and Eglinton. They’ve just announced a second location for my friends in the west end, in Etobicoke.
The secret was probably the worst kept in years, but the second location of Piano Piano is opening on Mount Pleasant. The giant pink mural blanketing the building was a sure sign, we’re excited to have this kid friendly concept welcome a sibling.
Terroni and Sud Forno are wrapping up the massive project set in a heritage house/condo concept at Yonge and Eglinton. This bustling neighbourhood is ready to devour this dream team, with morning to night eats and treats from this Italian heavyweight.
Babel at Yonge and York Mills is the latest Toronto project for O&B, who are expanding into Saskatchewan in a Risk-style invasion/domination across Canada. Babel is now occupying the space that was once a Movenpick, this time, no passport will be required for the Middle Eastern eatery, no word on if they removed the swing bench in the back.
Buca is inching closer to completion for their St. Clair and Yonge property. If there’s anything better than more Buca, I don’t want to know.
Manulife Centre is still getting glammed, and anchor tenant Eataly attached to the project. If you haven’t been to one of the other locations, in Chicago, Italy or NYC, it’s a sprawling space of pasta, pizzas and grab and go Italian style, now Batali free.
Scratch Kitchen is taking over the ol’ Jack Astor’s down by St Lawrence Market. Not much is known about this new space, yet!
One of the best burger joints in town The Gabardine is closing.
Our Spanish hearts sunk when we heard Cava closed early September, until we found out they were moving downtown instead…stay tuned on more!
Harry’s Charbroiled has closed. Chef Grant van Gameren says an impending renovation and other infrastructure spends have forced the closure.
