This popped onto my radar this morning and I had to share. Women Who Changed The World is an amazing app that tells the stories of from around the world. The beautifully illustrated collection created for children offers true stories of women in history and of those who continue to strive to make this a better world.

It’s not often that our kids are learning about female heroes in the classroom and there are many. Gemma Malet, founder and co-CEO of the app publisher, Learny App, came up with the idea stemming from a conversation she had with her own young daughter. She had asked if girls could be pilots even though Malet always taught her children that girls could do anything.

The app currently includes the stories of these remarkable women:

  • Rosa Parks
  • Amelia Earhart
  • Marie Curie
  • Jane Goodall
  • Wangari Maathai
  • Frida Kahlo
  • Malala Yousafzai
  • Valentina Tereshkova
  • Svetlana Savitskaya
  • Sally Ride
  • Mae Jemison
  • Margaret Hamilton
  • Peggy Whitson
  • Liu Yang
  • Katherine Johnson

App is created for early readers and soon to be readers who can enjoy the stories by listening along.

While the team at Learny App was doing their research they set out a checklist of what they were in search of: The women must represent global, racial, ethnic, and religious diversity; they must still be living or have lived recently. They had to have inspiring jobs and interesting lives; and, finally, they had to be making the world a better place through their work. They will continue to add stories and build on the great contributions made by women from around the world.

By the way, the app was designed, illustrated and programmed by women!

The Women Who Changed The World App ($3.99) is only available through the AppStore for iOS devices
