Amazing benefits of a self-facial massage

In a world of never-ending skincare products and high-tech beauty treatments, there’s one simple and cost-effective ritual that can transform your skin—a self-facial massage in just minutes. Not only does it feel amazing, but it also provides a host of benefits for your skin, mind, and overall well-being. After experiencing many in-spa facials, I’ve taken note of the way aestheticians have incorporated a facial massage and now I’ve incorporated that ritual at home – every morning and night. Let’s dive into why this little extra TLC through facial massage is one of my favourite daily rituals.

Boosts Circulation for That Radiant Glow

Ever wonder why your skin looks extra radiant after a professional facial? Yes, I research the products they use but It’s also about circulation! A facial massage increases blood flow to the skin, bringing oxygen and nutrients that help your complexion look fresh and healthy. Plus, improved circulation can help reduce dullness and enhance that natural glow many of us desire..

Reduces Puffiness and Enhances Lymphatic Drainage

Woke up looking a little puffy? A gentle self-massage can help! Lymphatic drainage is the body’s way of eliminating toxins and excess fluids, and a facial massage can stimulate this process. By using gentle, upward strokes, you can de-puff areas like under your eyes and sculpt your jawline, revealing a more contoured and refreshed look. Remember to drink water to help naturally remove the toxins.

Relieves Tension and Reduces Stress

Our faces hold a surprising amount of tension—especially in the jaw, temples, and forehead. Regular facial massages can help relax tight muscles, relieve headaches, and even reduce the appearance of tension lines. Plus, the act of massaging your face can be incredibly soothing, making it a great self-care ritual to unwind after a long day.

Self-facial Enhances Product Absorption

Your serums and moisturizers will work even better when combined with a facial massage. The movement helps to distribute products evenly and encourages deeper absorption, maximizing their effectiveness. Next time you apply your skincare, take an extra minute to massage it in—you’ll be surprised at the difference it makes.

Promotes a Natural Facelift Effect

While it won’t replace Botox or fillers, regular facial massages can provide a natural lifting and firming effect. The stimulation helps to tone facial muscles and improve skin elasticity, which can lead to a more youthful and sculpted appearance over time.

Speaking of Botox and fillers, check with your trusted aesthetician about at-home facial massages. If you’ve added either, you won’t want to massage your face for a few weeks. In the case of fillers, they may recommend not doing this at all.

How to Do a Simple Self-Facial Massage

Ready to give it a try? In just a few minutes a day, you can boost your skin’s health, and enjoy that fresh, glowing look—all without leaving your home. Here’s a quick routine to get you started:

  1. Start with Clean Hands and Skin – Wash your hands and face before you begin.
  2. Apply a Facial Oil or Moisturizer – This helps your fingers glide smoothly over your skin. Over the past few weeks, I’ve incorporated Dermalogica’s NEW multivitamin power recovery cream with ACE vitamin complex and noticed how refreshed and radiant my skin looks (not a greasy look but healthy and radiant). It absorbs and works well with my self-facial massage routine.
  3. Use Gentle, Upward Motions – Start from the centre of your face and work outwards.
  4. Focus on Key Areas – Use circular motions on your forehead, light tapping under your eyes, and sweeping motions along your jawline and neck.

Skincare Products for Your Self-facial Needs:

A self-facial massage is beneficial regardless of what high-quality skin care products you choose to use. But having said that, I have sensitive skin and need products that are effective and won’t cause my skin to react.

There are also factors I consider including the season — in the winter I reach for products that are a bit richer because it’s colder out and the air is dry. I’m also concerned about collagen loss, fine lines, and the impact of overall stress on the face and body.

Self-facial Skincare Favourites:

Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel is a soap-free foaming cleanser that’s effective and gentle for all skin types.

Dermalogica’s PreCleanse Cleansing Oil if you use sunscreen on your face, you’ll want to add this to your cleansing stage. Consider it a deep cleanse step that melts away layers of excess sebum (oil), sunscreen, waterproof make-up, environmental pollutants and residual products that build up on the skin throughout the day. Ideal even for oily skin conditions as it doesn’t clog pores.

We <3 Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum

The Face Shop’s Rice Water Bright Cleansing Foam is gentle and enriched with a natural rice water solution with brightening properties, it cleanses skin without irritation. I also carry a pack of this brand’s facial wipes in my gym bag for a quick cleanup after my workout.

The Face Shop’s Tea Tree Toner Pads are formulated with the triple acid complex and tea tree extract to balance the skin, reduce excess sebum and reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. Each thin pad also has two sides with different textures to help smooth the skin gently.

Dermalogica’s NEW Multivitamin Power Recovery Cream with ACE vitamin complex as mentioned, is my current winter go-to cream after toning and cleansing. It works well with this self-facial massage ritual and is effective both immediately and in the long term. This cream is designed to treat and prevent visible signs of stressed skin—including dryness, dullness, fine lines, and sagging. Vitamins A, C, and E help to protect and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. It’s also loaded with enriching vitamins, antioxidants, and peptides, to restore balance, and help to revitalize tired and sensitive skin.

Aesop’s In Two Minds Facial Hydrator is great if you prefer a more matte finish. A rapidly absorbed formulation that delivers lightweight hydration ideal for combination skin. Leaves the skin soft, smooth and hydrated. I tend to swap this in when I’m on my workout days or when I’m in more humid conditions. The main ingredient list includes witch hazel which is known to have many skincare benefits, including treating acne, reducing inflammation, and soothing irritation. It can also help with sunburns.
