2020 is here and one thing is for sure. The keto diet is still going strong. Once a recommended diet for diabetics, the carb-free craze continues in all its glory. And while gluten-free and cauliflower crusts have been on the menu for a while, the Keto Uncrust from Pizza Pizza is a departure for the pizza chain.
So what’s in the crust? While Pizza Pizza maintains it is not-gluten free (as it’s made in the same area as their regular crust) but the dough itself is comprised of organic coconut flour, egg whites, liquid whole eggs, organic pumpkin seed flour, psyllium husk, flax meal, extra virgin olive oil, coconut milk, ground chia, salt, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, cream of tartar, baking soda, Italian herbs, chicory root, yeast.
Compelling! So what does it taste like?
The dough brings a slightly nutty flavour to the fold, and depending on how you top it, can be a little soggy in spots. Pesto sauce seems to hold up better and compliment the pumpkin notes. Made by Toronto based Unbun Foods, the dough is a decent replacement to carb rich options, and allows the toppings to really shine. Margherita and veggie based ingredients seem to work best, but is there any bad way to top a pizza? It’s just too personal to call…
Weighing in at 4g non-fibre net carbs per crust, and no added sugar, the svelte pizzas are a solution for those sticking to their scripts, but I would skip it and stick to a solo slice of the real thing any day. But if you’re sticking to the diet, which has been wildly successful for friends of mine, then you’ll want to double down on your efforts and not, nope, never cheat.
