You still have a couple weeks left to hop in your car and make a quick trip to check out the fall colours so why not try a new spot?
Westport is a cute little village in Eastern Ontario, at the west end of the Upper Rideau Lakes, between Kingston and Ottawa. I have been coming here for at least 20 years to visit family and enjoy long, fall drives to see some of the most spectacular displays of fall foliage imaginable.
The three hour drive is uneventful until you pull off of the 401 onto Perth road (highway 10), where you will be rewarded with a beautiful, winding, limestone lined road that leads your directly to Westport.
Once you get there, there are a couple of options for food and entertainment to keep you busy for an overnight visit.
You can really take just about any small side road to enjoy some fabulous scenery, but my favourite is the road from Westport to Perth: Take Spring St, out of town to country road 36 and then take a right on country road 6 and take it all the way into Perth. Perth is a larger town but also full of cute restaurants and shops if you want to stop for lunch and explore. There is a beautiful park just behind the main street called Stewart Park where you can stretch your legs before hopping back in the car.
This is my personal favourite and feels like an upscale boutique B&B with amazing bedding and decor.
The original Inn in Westport, all rooms have private bathrooms but no phones or tvs. It’s the only full service hotel right in town with a restaurant on site and a full breakfast included in your room rate.
To eat and drink:
Fall hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 11am to 6pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to 8pm and closing at 5pm on Sunday
In the summer, this pretty winery operates a full scale, outdoor restaurant on the weekends but once fall hits, it’s just wood fired pizza but it’s great pizza and one a crisp fall day, it’s still a beautiful place to grab a bite with a bit of wine tasting thrown in for good measure
Friday and Saturday: Pizza and Wine, open 11-7pm
Sunday: Pizza and Wine 11-5
They also let you come out and help with the harvest for two weekends on Community Harvest Days
On Oct 12 and Oct 19 9am to 7pm you can go spend the day helping harvest the grapes. Kid’s are welcome and you are looking at a 9am start, finishing up around 3 or 4pm followed by a thank you meal with wine, maybe dancing and a chance to watch grape production begin.
This little tea room is absolutely adorable and the perfect place to stick out your pinky and dig into a tower of fancy tea sandwiches. Fall hours 11am to 4pm but are sometimes closed for private dinners and it only has a few tables so it’s best to contact them first to make a reservation
Your basic local diner fare on the main drag
Dinner, dancing and a reputation for booking great bands, the Cove is opened later than any other place in town for an end of evening cocktail or snack.
get in a round of golf on this cute 9 hole golf course a couple minutes outside of town
Hike up to the top to see the fall colours in all their splendour with an incredible view of the village of Westport
There are also lots of bike and hiking trails, great fishing and even boat rentals at Norris’s if that’s your thing. You will find your typical, small town shops and boutiques in the village if you want to do a bit of shopping.
