Pizza happens to be one of my favourite food groups. I celebrate most pizzas with unbridled enthusiasm- thick crust, crispy thin crust, wood fired pizzas cooked in 90 seconds, pretty much every pie (except dirty deep dish Chicago style, I just can’t get down with that). So when Pizza Pizza launched their new cauliflower crust pizzas, I may have been a little skeptical. Gluten free by nature- is this a marketing ploy to go after wheat-avoiders?

While the toppings are nothing new, the revelation is in the crust. From their website, they list the ingredients of the base as: Non-GMO cauliflower, Non-GMO pizza mix ((corn starch, rice flour, potato starch, dextrose, vegetable fibers (psyllium, fructose, emulsifier), vegetable fibers (inulin), stabilizer (sorbitol)), non-GMO yeast, non-GMO extra virgin olive oil, non-GMO brown cane sugar, non-GMO sea salt.

The crust is convincing. My cauliflower hating husband enjoyed the taste, with no notable or distinguishable cauliflower taste, it resembles a classic crust, with a decent chew that holds up well to the toppings. No flaccid triangle letting your toppings slip away, this crust is up to the challenge.

Currently two pizzas are featured on the Cauli menu, the Cauli Pesto (pictured) is comprised of pesto sauce, grilled chicken, roasted red peppers, spinach, mozzarella cheese and italiano blend seasoning, while the Cauli Blanco is topped with olive oil, artichokes, grilled zucchini, roasted garlic, mozzarella cheese, parmesan and italiano blend seasoning. The cauliflower crust is on offer for you to make your own custom pizza, available in medium size only.

While I originally perceived the new Cauli Pizzas as gimmicky, it’s glaringly obvious that there’s an appetite out there for gluten free options. Why not beef up your 5-10 a day veggie count by slipping some into the crust too? Cauliflower is an absolute chameleon for many dishes, appeasing vegans and health conscious peeps who crave a chicken substitute, or to add texture and depth to a pasta or casserole. The natural progression of a food trend to incorporate something nutritional and sustainable only makes sense. The skeptic in me has officially been shut down. Cauli pizzas are a win!
