There are certain ages when we notice certain changes in our skin. I use to relish, no actually I boasted about being blessed with skin that could easily tan and not burn. I had skin that many envied. Then things started to change…or rather, became noticeably different. In my early 30s, my skin started to show signs of damage. I then learned that when you actually notice then it’s too late. Splotchy sun spots that were deep that required expensive visits to the dermatologist for more aggressive treatments. But over the past few years, I’ve noticed a number of skin care products that are actually helping to repair damaged and aging skin.
Now don’t turn your nose to the word “aging” — it’s life. We all age. And if you want to repair and protect you need to be serious. The skincare products are out there but you need to understand what they do and how they work.
I’ve been testing out Dermalogica’s new BioLumin-C Serum for a few weeks now. New to the market here in Canada this month (Sephora and Dermalogica.ca) , it’s one important step to help defend premature aging. This new serum’s promises really appealed to me as I’ve always been jealous of those who have that perfectly glowing skin. But we have so many questions about our skin and the changes we experience! We reached out to Brooke Anderson, Skin Expert & Instructor at Dermalogica Canada to get some professional answers.
We often think of skincare products targeting aging is for older skin… okay, what’s the reality? When should we start?
BA: The truth is, there is no such thing as “too young” to starting taking care of your skin. The more we can use advanced ingredients to help affect how the skin ages and try to slow that process down, the better. With that being said, a younger skin in their late teens may not have the same needs as someone who is already experiencing signs of aging. So generally, the best place to start is by focusing on the eye area. This delicate skin is one of the first areas to show signs of aging, so by simply adding an eye treatment to your routine that has been formulated to care for this delicate skin, is a great place to start, even in your late teens! We know the sun is our worst skin enemy, but we are now learning that there’s are others. Tell us about what else damages our skin over time?
BA: Unfortunately, our skin is exposed to many stressors on a daily basis that can cause the skin to age even quicker! The sun is definitely your worst enemy. On top of that, there are some other evil sidekicks that can cause destruction in our skin. Imagine all of the ozone and pollution we are exposed to on a daily basis which can actually cause your skin to go in to a protective overdrive, activating specific enzymes in the skin to breakdown your collagen and elastin leading to fine lines and sagging. Our dramatic Canadian climate also plays a huge role in how our skin functions and ages. Harsh cold or extreme heat can cause sensitivity issues leading to further destruction in our skin.
And probably some things we have all considered are linked to our lifestyle choices; smoking, which essentially creates a cloud of pollution around the skin causing what is known as free radical damage leading to signs of aging, excessive alcohol intake, lack of sleep, stress and even low fat diets can all play their own role in accelerating aging in your skin over time.
Myth or Fact: my skin … I got it from my momma?
BA: Believe it or not… this is a MYTH! The fact of the matter is, our aging can be divided in 2 categories, Intrinsic Aging which is essentially your biological clock ticking away, and Extrinsic Aging that includes lifestyle choices, climate and even stress. Astonishingly, 80-99% of aging is dues to Extrinsic factors, leaving the rest to genetics! Serum is best used when?
BA: Serums should always be applied before your moisturizer and sunscreen. Serums utilize smaller molecules in higher concentrations to target stubborn skin challenges. You want these smaller molecules to travel as far as possible into the deeper layers of the skin to give you the most benefit.
Do we still need to use moisturizer over it?
BA: Absolutely! Your moisturizer works not only to rehydrate and balance the skin, but it also works as a protective layer, to help seal in all of the benefits of the serum you have just applied. And don’t forget that SPF as the cherry on top!
It’s wedding season! Whether you’re in the Bride, in the wedding party, or a guest we all want to look our best. So, what are some important steps we can take to prep our skin — especially in humidity?
BA: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate- and that means drinking lots of water and using water-loving ingredients in your skincare such as Hyaluronic Acid found in our Skin Hydrating Booster to help maintain that water balance.
Stay out of the sun and wear your SPF daily to avoid and sunburns or pigmentation issues.
Watch your diet. Try an avoid too much sugar and too many processed/fried foods. These can cause your skin to breakout!
