My mantra for 2018 is restore the core! After a nagging injury kept me on the bench (mostly) for the past six months, it’s high time to get back to basics, and a strong core and trunk is a perfect place to start. I’ve been a fan of Nucleo Fitness since they opened in Leaside about a year ago, owner Marlene Kadin’s energy is infectious, and small class sizes lead by a knowledgeable team means, yes, I break a sweat, but more importantly I don’t break anything else!
Nucelo’s class schedule keeps rowing, using the WaterRower, at the forefront, but blends in a slew of other classes to add some variety into the mix. The Springwall class is just that spice. If you’re familiar with Pilates classes that use the Reformer, it’s a similar approach in theory and movement, but instead uses springs to customize the difficulty level. I love this approach as it levels the playing field for everyone, classes truly fit all fitness levels, and gains are noticeably made, rookies will see a progression from class to class, adding more tension to the springs = whoa, way more difficulty. Gains are made in strength for sure, but also flexibility, posture and alignment.
Classes run an hour in length, making it a total body workout. Legs, back, arms, and of course, core. Some of the movements are so precise you can feel muscles twitching that you didn’t even know were there. What I love most is that it’s not high intensity- you get the burn, you get that workout in, but you don’t leave soaked in sweat, you can jump back to work immediately after without stinking up the subway. I was quite sore in my back, arms and core, it was impressive how deep the workout penetrated.
