Taqueria’s in Toronto run the gamut of authentic, to Tex-Mex and everything in between. While I celebrate the whole collection, some places keep me coming back for more, and others, miss the mark completely. Toronto is a taco-rich city, but I still remember the days when Chi-Chi’s dominated the 6. Mi Taco on Queen West isn’t from Mexico proper, but owners (and mother and daughter) Vanessa and Lidia honed in on their taco making skills while living in Texas, or Mexico junior as I like to call it. It’s a welcome addition to the burrito rich landscape that was once a destitute valley of Chi-Chi’s meagerness.
Their tidy fast casual concept on Queen West is a taco-lovers delight. Upon entering, you’re greeted by the open kitchen, and all the sights, sounds and smells that go with it. Known for more than just tacos, Mi Taco offers a menu meant for customization- picking the protein, like chicken, fish, pork, steak or vegan option + toppings like lettuce, queso fresco, pico de gallo and grilled onions + a sauce, crema, salsa or both.
Burritos are also up for grabs, as is the super tasty Mexican street corn, which conveniently comes in pre-cut off the cob so you can be somewhat civil while pigging out. Nachos and Guac are mandatory, paired best with a Jarrito, but mostly, if I wasn’t on the clock a Hibiscus Margarita would hit the spot instead. Yes, they are licenced!
My top pick was definitely the carnita, or pork taco. Rich in flavour, the pork was tender and well spiced and I really enjoyed the in house flour made tortilla it came on. The steak was a close second, and if you’re looking to cut carbs, there’s a bowl option too. Combos, like the Taco Plato ($10.25) pair your choice of taco + rice and smashed beans.
